Mandarin Duck - Wood Art by amazoncanvas Mandarin Duck - Wood Art by amazoncanvas
I found this amazing piece of wood with dark swirls and water current highlights, my thought was to draw a duck, maybe some lotus flowers, but I also want to add a few fishes. So, this is what I've got for the most beautiful duck in the world (for me anyway) - Mandarin Duck.

This is a great piece using the reflection and grain in the wood. It is hard to determine what might be painted and what belongs to the color of the wood. Almost like an optical illusion.

Thank you very much. Everything you see are of natural wood color and grain - no paint at all.

This is remarkable, absolutely remarkable. The best piece in your gallery, in my opinion. The shape of the reflection pieces are just perfect, and so are the colours. It's hard enough to get that many different shades of wood for a Mandarin Duck in the first place, let alone double it so you have different ones in the water. This is absolutely beautiful. I am just... I can't even find words to express how much I love this.

I can only imagine the amount of planning that went into positioning the duck within the ripples around him. I also like the way the fish swim between the swirls of water/wood grain.

That is correct! Finding and positioning the duck to the ripples was time consuming but it was all worth it. Thanks for the comment.

Wow, very nice! You worked with what the wood gave you so perfectly! I'm trying to tell, did you do inlay or is that paint? Absolutely incredible if it's inlay, this is really unique!

It is inlay, no paint, just natural wood colors and textures.
Thank you.

Are you serious about wanting to sell the original of this? Or have you already? I'm looking for a Christmas gift for my hubby (who also love mandarins, and his char is half-mandarin), and this would be perfect!! <3<3<3

I do offer prints version of this here: [link]
The original is very expensive (a few thousands dollars).
I don't know if you want to spend that much for an original.
The print looks great too and comes in different sizes.

Ah ok...I sadly can't afford it then, and I prefer originals to prints (I already have several print posters that I don't even have frames for, since I prefer to hang originals and woodart on the walls to prints). But thanks so much for getting back to me! :)

Thank you Sydney.
Yes, it took me awhile to figure how to do the duck's neck feathers. At first it scares me that I have to draw and cut lots of small feathers, but I finally used that wood specie and end up cutting only 6 pieces. whew!

Oh wow! Well that is good news! How thin are the wood slabs? I would try, but I have next to no tools or wood in my area.

It is about 5 pieces of regular papers put together.
I am sure you can cut it with a sharp exacto knife.
The hard part is avoid cutting your fingers :-}
