Bird and Bee - Marquetry by amazoncanvas Bird and Bee - Marquetry by amazoncanvas
This artwork is made by cutting and gluing exotic, natural wood veneers together.

My all time favorite fans are my 7 and 5 years old daughters. They collect all my art prints for a dollar each, bless their hearts. I made two similar pieces, each with a different bird, a few years ago and gave them as presents to my sweet hearts. They still think it is the cutest picture. So, I redesigned and added a bee to it. By the way, this bird is not a Bee Eater.

You can view the pieces of wood I used for the bird here: [link] [link] [link]

I watched the youtube video on how this piece was made and was excited to see it here. I loved the fact that you made a computer program to preview your grain and color selection. Is there any chance you would want to make that program available for sale because I would be very interested.
I can't believe how large this piece is. Much bigger than I thought at first. I can't remember from the video about how the pieces are cut. Are you using the window method with a knife or double bevel with a scrollsaw? What is your favorite adhesive for gluing down the substrate? At any rate you are a brilliant craftsman and your work just blows me away. Someday I hope I can do work that is up to this level.

Thanks, send me an email at socialize@amazoncanvas.com. In the mean time, yes I am almost ready to release the software, it is a plug-in for Adobe Illustrator.

Oh, I'm sorry. I just looked at the The American Marquetry Society's page and found the answer to my questions. If I understand correctly, it is basically puzzle-pieced together. That seems pretty tough!

Yes, it is like that and it is tough.
Thank you I am glad it is on Wikipedia.

Are the pieces of wood layered on top of each other, or are they pieced together like puzzles? Or is it inlaid? Is the surface smooth? I am a bit confused about the properties of marquetry.

This piece gives me such a sense of fresh happiness, like that found in the spring, when I get to smell the new grass, see the fresh flower blooms, and hear the birds chirping in the early morning. Ah, such happiness!
